Backup Providers Overview

Backups As A Service is the discussion of all articles in this grouping of backup related articles. BaaS or Backups as a service as it is known does have varying definitions and some people tend to believe the definition is restricted to cloud backup services however that is not correct.

Backups As A Service is any combination of backup services and backup applications that you as the service provider decide to package up as a backup service and offer on a monthly subscription to your backup clients.

While you are here, take a look at some of our other Backup overviews which break down several important backup topics that may interest service providers:

The Service Part Is The Important Part!

Backups As A Service is not another name for cloud backups. A well thought out service that sells a backup solution on a monthly basis using sometimes multiple backup vendors should have a combination of both local NAS device based components as well as an online cloud backup component.

While I do not subscribe to offering cloud only backup or local only backup solutions, there is nothing technically wrong with providing either of those and still calling it a Backup as a Service. It is purely the monthly billing component that determines that it is a service.

The Service in BaaS or Backups as a Service is what is important, the very definition is that you offer a solution that involves a backup being packaged up as a monthly service. So it is the billing part of BaaS that defines that it is a service versus something like a backup project or backup alert checks which are taken out of a block time agreement.

So to summarize, the top 10 google definitions that come up for BaaS are in actual fact inaccurate because they all define it as an online backup solution. Is anyone else as outraged as me at this travesty?
